Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and still remembered as the fastest ocean liner ever built, she represents a rare surviving achievement of America’s maritime age.
Today, this historic vessel faces a decision by Okaloosa County that could permanently remove her from the nation’s historic landscape by intentionally sinking her as an artificial reef.
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, there is still time to call for informed review, public engagement, and preservation-oriented alternatives.

Who We Are
The SS United States Preservation Foundation, Inc. is a Florida not-for-profit corporation dedicated to preserving, protecting, documenting, and advancing public understanding of the SS United States and her historic, cultural, maritime, and national significance.
Board-led and supported by officers, advisors, and volunteers, the Foundation is actively working to advance preservation-focused solutions, engage the public, and advocate for responsible alternatives that honor the ship’s legacy while there is still time.
Our Role in This Effort
The future of the SS United States is being shaped through ongoing public engagement, agency review, and preservation advocacy. As a federally recognized Consulting Party during the Section 106 review process, the SS United States Preservation Foundation has worked to ensure the ship's historic significance, preservation alternatives, and supporting evidence are part of the official record.
Beyond the federal review, the Foundation continues to engage with public officials, preservation organizations, subject-matter experts, and the American people to encourage informed decision-making and responsible stewardship of one of our nation's most significant historic vessels.
While the federal review will eventually conclude, the Foundation's commitment to preserving and advancing the legacy of the SS United States will continue.
The SS United States remains with us today, but time is running short. While preservation-oriented alternatives still exist, they require continued public engagement, serious consideration, and a willingness to pursue responsible outcomes before an irreversible decision is carried out.
