Chapter 1

The Last Watch: A Father, A Son, & Their Ship

For Sean—whose voice christens the tide of remembrance. Son of a Mariner. Bearer of the mantle. The first to stand watch over her legacy. Through you, memory becomes movement, and America’s Flagship stirs once more. Echoes of Legacy begins with friendship, lineage, and a ship worth saving— anchored by the man who reminds us why she must endure. - Acta Non Verba

"Flagship of the U.S. Merchant Marine"

The SS UNITED STATES was and is now the flagship of the US Merchant Marine. We cannot destroy our flagship. The technological innovation, speed, lines, and envy of every nation was none other than the Super Liner SS UNITED STATES, affectionately known to mariners as the “BIG U”. Her speed and underwater hull design were guarded national secrets into the 1980s. Her distinctive teardrop  funnels (smokestacks) were immediately recognizable the world over. But most importantly, the BIG U demonstrated the power, prestige and everything that is American. Her presence in any port stood out even amongst the great liners of the day. There was never a ship like the SS UNITED STATES, and there will never be another. She needs to be saved as she is our American Flagship.

A Father's Legacy

My late father, WWII US Merchant Marine Veteran and licensed chief engineer, served for the last ten years on the SS UNITED STATES, from Third Assistant Engineer to Second Assistant Engineer in charge of the aft engine room. Although I lost him as a young man, he did see me follow his calling to the sea, when I graduated from State University of New York Maritime College, the first and oldest maritime academy in the United States, where incidentally, all the Masters and Captains who ever commanded the BIG U, had also graduated. But it was the inspirational stories that drove me to the sea, and although he didn’t see it, I know he was looking down on me when I took my first command of a ship as Master. I actually was aboard the BIG U in New York in 1969, albeit as a toddler, when she was in her prime. Years later, in 1991, I took my father, just before he passed, to see the BIG U as she sat in layup at a coal pier in Newport News Virginia, It has been 23 years since my father last saw the BIG U, and I cannot tell you the emotional and moving moment when my father walked up the gangway and touched the hull and he actually said, “I am home.”. He passed away not long after that day.

He stood the watch, answered the call—and now, he rests where his heart always belonged.

First Lady of the Seas - SS UNITED STATES

The Last Watch: A Father, A Son, & Their Ship.

The SS United States is not just a ship—she is a memory made of steel, a living monument to the men and women who built her, sailed her, and believed in what she stood for. In her engine rooms, a father gave his strength; on her decks, a son found his calling. And in a moment that defies time, when that father pressed his hand to her hull and whispered, “I am home,” the past and present embraced in one final goodbye.

To send her to the ocean floor is not to honor her—it is to drown a nation’s heartbeat, to silence the very soul of American maritime legacy. We must not let that happen. We must fight to save her, for she carries within her the spirit of all who have ever dared to serve, to dream, and to call the sea their home.

Any Nation which would disregard its Namesake for the foolish pursuit of meaningless titles and monetary gain is a Nation which has forgotten its Heritage, forsaken its Forefathers, and now has resided under a False Flag."

She is fading, and with her, the voices of men who gave everything to keep her afloat—now it's our turn. Sign below, share her story, and rise… before the last light of liberty flickers out, and the ship that bore a nation’s promise is lost to silence forever.
